Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore

The Abbey was founded in 1313 by Bernardo Tolomei, when he became part of the Benedictine order. Today the abbey is one of the most interesting places of the Crete Senesi.

The church was built at the beginning of 1400 but the internal part was transformed in Baroque style in the 18th century, the wooden quire is a unique masterpiece of Fra Giovanni da Verona and was created between 1503 and 1505.

The frescos of the great cloister portray the Life of Saint Benedict in 35 scenes by Signorelli and Bazzi and are a great attraction.

The library, the monchs’ lab, the museum and dining room so as the cellar and the shop complete the itinerary in this mysterious and fascinating place that can provide a good trip also for families with children.

Opening times of the abbey:

9:15 a.m. -12:00 p.m.

03:15 p.m. – 05:00 p.m.

Sunday the Abbey closes at 12:30 p.m.

The entrance is free. Toll parking.
